David Sedaris has lived an unusual, yet interesting life. As a child he spent his days in North Carolina, having to endure speech therapy classes in order to fix his lisp. David was always involved in musical extracurricular activities because his father was a jazz enthusiast, who dreamed of having his kids in a band. He took guitar lessons with a midget and was an extreme drug addict throughout his college years. In his late forties he decided to move to Paris with his long term boyfriend and attempt for the second time to receive a college education. For example, in the passage titled "Picka Pocketoni", Sedaris is able to show how American tourists are sometimes quick to judge those from the foreign destination that they are visiting, without knowing much of the culture. He recounts his experience on a Paris Metro, where he was labeled as a filthy person and a thief just because he lived in France. Sedaris makes his readers ponder on their personal decisions and perception of life.
Whether explaining Easter to classmates or watching men play soccer with a bull, Sedaris is able to express his opinions in a relaxed and humorous tone. Sedaris' use of a relaxed tone makes the reader feel like they are being told a story by a close friend. Sedaris' states his feelings throughout his stories, which make the writing seem more personal. He also incorporates a humorous tone in some of his stories. This choice of tone results in an intrigued reader who wants to keep reading about Sedaris' entertaining life. The comical stories allow for the reader enjoy learning about Sedaris' life and think back to their own personal experiences where all they could do was laugh about their personal flaws.
